Shadowing
Shadowing practice: loop any line, slow it down, speak along
Shadowing means you hear a line and say it with the speaker. LangScribe keeps that line on a loop, lets you slow it down, and lets you hide one side of the bilingual text while you try.
This works in any language the subtitles are written in. Open a local file or a direct link, or start from subtitles you import. The player does not record your voice and does not score your pronunciation.
Loop, speed, and hide-one-side are the practice tools. No recording. No pronunciation score.
A line you can repeat is the whole drill
Shadowing falls apart when you cannot land on the same sentence again. A player that only moves forward makes you the one who rewinds by hand.
- One sentence, on repeat
- Slower playback while the words are still new
- The text nearby when you need it, and one side hidden when you do not
Three steps, then you speak
LangScribe sets up the line. You do the speaking. Nothing in the app listens back.
- Open a video or audio file you have the right to use, or import SRT, VTT, or ASS if you already have the lines.
- Loop the current sentence, or mark an A-B stretch. Set speed from 0.5× to 2×. 0.75× is one of the steps.
- Hide the original or the translation and speak along. One of the two stays on screen. There is no microphone comparison and no score.
What you can turn off
Bilingual lines can show the original and the translation together. For a speaking pass, hide the side you do not want to read. The player keeps the other side visible so the cue does not go blank.
- Hide the translation and read the original while you speak
- Hide the original and use the translation as a prompt
- Search the subtitles and click a timestamp to pick the next line

The drill, without a score
These controls are what the player actually does during a speaking pass.
| You want | What happens |
|---|---|
| Hear the same sentence again | Single-line loop, or an A-B loop. |
| More time to say it | Speed from 0.5× to 2×, including 0.75×. |
| Less text while you speak | Hide the original or the translation. One side remains. |
There is no recording, waveform compare, or pronunciation grade. The check is your ear against the line.
Open a file and try one lineA player, not a speaking test
- LangScribe does not record your voice for this drill.
- It does not score pronunciation or show a pass or fail.
- You cannot hide both the original and the translation at once. One stays visible.
FAQ
Can I shadow any language?
Yes, as long as the line is a timed subtitle. The loop and the speed control do not depend on the language.
Does LangScribe listen to me or score my accent?
No. It does not record a comparison and it does not give a pronunciation score.
Can I hide the text?
You can hide the original or the translation. One of them stays on screen, so the line does not disappear completely.
How slow can the line go?
Playback runs from 0.5× to 2×. 0.75× is one of the available steps, along with speeds in between.
What if there are no subtitles?
Import SRT, VTT, or ASS for free, or generate AI subtitles at 2 credits per minute. Sign-in is required for AI.
Is the video uploaded?
Not for playback. Local files stay on your device. AI transcription, if you turn it on, sends short audio chunks.
Loop the line. Say it. Loop it again.
Open a video you have, park on one sentence, and slow it down until you can stay with the speaker.
